Your Partner to Improve Teaching and Learning for At-Risk Schools
With $3.5 billion in funding made available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the Obama administration is challenging states and districts to implement bold reforms that will transform the 5,000 lowest-performing schools in America. Title I School Improvement Grants will provide funding over three years to dramatically transform these lowest-performing schools into safe environments where students are learning.
The Center for Comprehensive School Improvement's range of school improvement solutions support targeted, intensive support and effective interventions to turn around schools identified for corrective action and restructuring. Our approach is based on the four assurances for education reform listed in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act:
Using this approach, the Center for School Improvement partners with states and districts to help implement one of the four models for school improvement:
- The transformation model includes replacing the principal and removing teachers who have been determined to be ineffective, instituting comprehensive instructional reform strategies, increasing learning time and creating community-oriented schools, and providing operational flexibility and sustained support.
- The turnaround model includes replacing the principal and rehiring no more than 50 percent of the existing staff, implementing strategies to recruit and retain staff, adopting a new governance structure and increasing learning time.
- The restart model involves converting the school and reopening it under a charter management organization or an education management organization and enrolling any former student who wishes to attend.
- As part of the school closure model, the Local Education Agency closes a school and enrolls the students who attended that school in other schools that are higher achieving.
